Horizon (september 2011)

126594 Rasmus Rønn Nielsen, The Dudes 2 September 2011, 21:53

It has been a long time since we, the developers, wrote a "Horizon post". For those of you who don't know, we use Horizon posts to tell you about what we're working on and what we would like to work on in the future.

This month

As most people probably have figured out by reading the last news post we are currently working on a stadium editor.

The stadium editor idea is actually several years old. It is something we have been wanting to realize for a long time. Looking at the user surveys we have sent out during the last couple of years, it has been one of the most requested features.

The stadium editor will enable you to see, control, and upgrade your stadium and its surroundings. You start of with an old worn-out pitch with small fences around it. From this point, you must construct tribunes, and upgrade these in order to increase the capacity and size of your stadium. You'll need to upgrade each section of your tribunes and pitch individually.

Bigger tribunes gives you a larger spectator capacity, and better pitches reduces the risk of player injury. And as a bonus, a level 5 stadium looks absolutely gorgeous. You will also be able to show off your stadium from your club profile page.

Besides constructing things you must make sure you stadium elements is in good shape by repairing them whenever it is needed.

In the first version of this stadium editor, you will only be able to construct and upgrade tribunes and the pitch itself.

The second version will allow you to do make creative stuff, like adding trees, roads, restaurants, hot dog stands, parks, etc. This will make it possible to personalize your stadium ground. You can design it as you please :)

The more you can offer your fans around your stadium, the more spectators you'll get. And the more you'll earn each match.

We hope to be able to release version 1 sometime before October but we cannot promise this. Its released when its done. After this, we'll start working on the before mentioned version 2.

Here you can see a preview: Preview

Long term plans

As I've said several times, it is no secret that we have spent a lot of time improving layout, navigation, and usability on Virtual Manager. We have done this, because we felt it was important to improve the game in this area.

That being said, these things are not the most important when it comes to creating great gameplay experiences; that is the features and the gameplay. Therefore we happy to say, that we're now pretty satisfied with the looks of the game; we're now ready to focus on actual functionality.

As I said, the stadium editor will be the next big thing to hit Virtual Manager. After this, we have a long list of exciting improvements we have been wanting to make for a long time. Some of these are:

  • New improved match engine: more realistic, better simulation of "real tactics", improved "3d feeling" (the ball will be able to 'fly' from the ground) New match viewer: this will be updated alongside the new match engine Better tactics editor: We'd like to make it possible to set penalty and set piece takers. Also, we want to make possible to define dynamic changes to a tactic depending on how a match evolves. This should enable you to set more "intelligent" tactics. For example, you will be able to change formation if a midfielder is sent off, but only if there is less than 20 minutes and you are leading with to goals. Or maybe, you'd just like change to a defensive formation if you are leading by 1 with 10 minutes left of a game. These "rules" should be freely mixable so you can set up your tactics just the way you want.
  • National teams: National matches, national tournaments and democratic election of national coach. Youth academy: We're not yet sure how to make this feature, but we think it would be cool to make this part of the game more interesting. Stats reduction for older players: Today the oldest players are the best player. This needs to change to better reflect the real world in which the best players are around 23-29 years old.
  • Faster scout: The scout should be more effective and faster. We're also considering making it possible to search the entire player database by using him.
  • Mobile app: You should be able to play Virtual Manager from your smartphone.

The list is actually much longer - but the above mentioned is the most important.

The problem with this list is that each feature will take a long time to develop. Therefore, it is important for me to stress, that we do not intend to be done with these things in a near future. We'd rather build fewer features of higher quality, than more features at lower quality.

Because each features takes a lot of time, it is very important to start off with the most important feature. But what feature is that? Well, that question is best answered by you, the users. We have been sending out several user surveys in the past. Unfortunately we do not like them very much: the results get outdated pretty fast, and they can be a pain set up and send out. The result is that they are not send out as often as they should be.

There must be a better way. And we believe we have come up with one. We're planning on adding a "proposal section" to the site. On this page you will be able to vote for whatever feature you'd like to see added the game the most. Users with Premium will be given 10 proposal points each months, and you can then spend these on whatever proposal you like the most. You can spend all on one proposal, or spread them across several proposals. It's up to you.

Each month each of the proposals will lose 10% of their points. This will make the list more "live" and give a more current view of your wishes.

This way it will be a lot easer for us to choose the right features to work on. If a certain feature is popular among you, it will be a matter of time before it reaches the top of the proposals list. In this way it will be easy to point out the most requested feature.

I hope you like our plans. As always, we'd love to hear what you think :)

Question. This now means that you have to spend more money to expand seats? Before you only had to buy new seats but now you will have to spend much much more money on many thing so you can expand seats?
And what is meant by level 5 stadium?

Thanks for the efforts, all ideas sound great. Cant wait to see them and play around with the features.

We will come up with a fair "transition" so you will be compensated based on how many seats you own when we reset the stadiums in order to be used with the new editor.

We will try and balance the stadium upgrades so that it will not be more expensive that it is now.

122135 PanPan, Shandong Luneng 2 September 2011, 22:18
So everyone starts with a default 500 seat stadium and is given money back for how much money they spent on expanding stadium previously?

We have not decided yet, but something like that is probably the way we'll do it.

I thought you wanted to put system in and everyone keep their current seat which would have been unfair to newer teams but if everyone start equal, but get compensated for money spent before it is fair smiley

What is a tribune. Ive looked up the defintion online and this is what I found, which I guess is not what you mean.

Rooted from the days of the Roman tribes, a tribune was part of a group of men elected annually by the Roman Senate who held military and voting responsiblities during the Roman Republic.

Source: http://robinfowler.suite101.com/what-is-a-tribune-a16600

Also, with regards to the proposals, how does a new proposal get onto the list. Do you decide? Or will the ideas be taken from the I/D section. Will you use the proposals from the International I/D section?

Although I like the compensation idea better, I don't think it would matter either way...

- The more seats you have now the more compensation you will receive, enabling you to grow your "new" stadium larger faster. Less seats less compensation, slower building.

- If we are traded seat for seat, larger stadiums will still be larger stadiums and smaller stadiums still smaller stadiums.

When we all start out equal getting comp. for the seats we all have now, we will all get the chance to build the new one from the ground up. Instead of missing out on creating the stadium if we are just given a larger one to begin with. I believe the compensation will give you a chance to say maybe rebuild a team, training facility or staff if you want to hold off on a larger stadium for a bit.

Either way I don't mind, just looking forward to the future changes.

Just wondering how you are going to adjust the stats of Players cos someone might have spent More money on a 34 yr old than a 23 yr old then u cud change it then the 23 yr old turns out better it seems like a very hard and long job 2 me.and would I be able to put a statue outside my stadium and change the colour of my seats so tht I can Put fclc only seats and have stand names.apart from tht keep up gd work

112183 Andy, Inter Urgran 3 September 2011, 00:07
ok you will give us compo..but what about the ticket sales we would lose? will it cover that? and it would be easier and fairer if you didnt reset the seats.
And would we make extra money from things like hot dog stands? also i think we should have a official club shop that we can manage. smiley
Other than that good work!

I think with new method you have to build other thing before building seat. That new method make seat building longer and more expensive. It is unfair if you keep your seat but I have to pay more money to buy stadium of equal size to your.

Well, if they are going to strip my stadium down to 500 seats as long as I get enough compensation to get it back to where it is now I dont mind.

So seen as 1 seat = 1,000C on the lowest package. I should be getting around 1 - 1.5 mil for 1,600 seats + 500 (default) If not then, I will be very dissapointed seen as in the last 6/7 weeks I have brought nothing but stadium expansions.
But I am looking forward to the proposal idea. So we can actually pick whats the most important.

Sounds great... Can't wait for the updates. Although I found a spelling mistake in the message, just saying because it's who I am:

'For example, you will be able to change formation if a midfielder is sent off, but only if there is less than 20 minutes and you are leading with 'to' goals.'

Should be two not to. smiley

I personally think that your idea about national games and tournament is good I also like how you want to improve the match viewer, at first I though your idea for the stadium was good but in the end after reading it I think you've gone to far. choosing were you build your stands is good and choosing to have a couple small stands or 1 big one is good, but hot dog stands and restaurants are a little to far i think please don't change it to much it's good as it is but like you say choosing were the extra seats go is good and I like that, please take my advise on this thank you

Yeah, I disagree. VM is ridicuosly fast paced which is why everyone loves it. But majority of other manager games out there already have a stadium builder with hot dog stands and shops etc. I don't think they are updating too far, they are just giving the users what they deserve. Apart from the clubhouse page and layout nothing has changed since 2009. They are just modernising the game. smiley

i was wondering though, i only have the default amount of seats, but what happens if i have lets say 1000?? would i be compensated?

also, i think it would be unfair if you have a 3000 stadium and get 200k in refunds, maybe people with 500 could also get something?

The sole reason we refund money for the seats - is that we're taking away your seats.

We are not taking away "the maintenance" you've bought, so therefore it does not make sense to compensate this.

Hi All,

I've been playing this game for a couple of years now, and I think these idea's would make great additions...What I personally would be most keen to see pushed through is the idea of decreasing older players abilities. This is one of the final elements of the game that doesn't make for a realisitic experience...in real life you will always have exceptions to that rule, such as Giggs, but I think on the whole (in my opinion) this is one of the few missing pieces at the moment in an otherwise awesome game/experience.
Cheers Guys - good luck with the developments, I'll be renewing my premium in a couple of months, so please continue spending my money wisely lol!
