Is premium required to do well in this game?

[Further edit]: As of 7th September 2023,
there are no clubs without Premium in either the top #500, or any of the top Divisions in any of the currently available 14 Leagues.
[Previous edit]: As of 6th November 2022, CamMar FC is the only club without Premium in the top #500 @ #409
As of January (3rd) 2018, the highest ranked club without Premium is:
Much Better Gunners at #298
there are no others in the top #500.
& this time I've stopped at #500 & not gone all the way down to #1,000.
Of the others listed below (14/7/15):
Mulles Moslere is currently at #550,
FC VxD is now at #580
RJS United is now at #727
CamMar FC is now at #737
Tonys Tiggers is now at #872.
the feat is now at #939
SuperFFC is now at #963
I think these results confirm that you probably do need Premium to get to the very top of this game - although I can say for sure that it is possible to get into (and remain in) a top Division without Premium. - It's hard work and takes a lot of player trading to make up the money you can't get from increased gate receipts - but it is achievable

The majority of these clubs have had Premium at some point in the past - with the notable exception of Mulles Moslere - which appears to be a completely "Premiumless" club - and is therefore doing exceptionally well indeed!
All that "bothers" me is, whether or not the latest change - in this case the wage rises -
encourages more people to join/stay with the game - or to pack up and leave.
If I'm the only one left playing - then I'll get to #1 - WHIPEE!
but... - that wont be much fun for long as I'll have no gate recepits - because all the other clubs will eventually lose all their players and be unable to field a team, and, I'll have no-one left to sell all my budding stars to.
My only income will be prize money every week for winning the leage and 3 Cup competitions, - yes that will cover my wage bill - but...
I hoped (no longer) that VM HQ would have a handle on how each change affects the gameworld after it's brought in.
I don't believe that's the case - and as with previous changes (too many to list now...) this one will no doubt cause such financial hardship to a number of managers that the game becomes a chore - and they will stop playing.
That's a huge shame - and doesn't appear likely to be limited to any particular group IMO.
We have in this thread alone "top" managers saying they'll be unable to continue, mid ranking managers saying the same, and "new starters" thinking they might's well give up before they've even got properly going.
There needs to be a "happy medium" where avergae income balances somewhere with necessary expenditure, - and I feel - along apparently with most other folks here - that this wage inflation has probably tipped that balance too far the wrong side for a large number of users

There was one culb in the top #200 and one more in the top #300
(but he sold up as his previous subscription ended and was dropping like a stone with a team of kids).
There were 6 clubs (- those two included) in the top #500.
There were a total (those 6 included) of 72 clubs in the top #1000 without Premium.
