There were great celebrations on Tyneside today when Newcastle U FC confirmed their place in the top flight of the Italian League, next season they will be a Seria A team. This promotion saw thousands of fans celebrating well into the night as Bergstrom’s team made good on the ambitions of club chairman David “two chins” Maguire, who has always stated that he sees top flight football as the natural destiny of the club.

It caps a remarkable rise for the club, and came 1 week short of its 2 year anniversary. Under Bergstrom’s stewardship, the team has risen up through the leagues in England and Scotland, before moving over to Italy, joining the 5th tier in February. This came shortly after the club substantially improved its training facilities at Gosforth Park and it’s clear in the players’ performance and the rise of young starlets like http://www.virtualmanager.com/players/9827798-reece-noble and http://www.virtualmanager.com/players/9769325-bob-pieper just how important a part this has been to the team’s success. Chief Trainer Barry Falconer and his team have done tremendously well in minimising injuries and helping to ensure that the players have been able to develop very well, utilising the impressive facilities.

The promotion season just concluding has seen Newcastle hold off stiff opposition to secure a strong runners-up spot, ahead of longer-established clubs http://www.virtualmanager.com/clubs/314 and http://www.virtualmanager.com/clubs/85007 although the team had few answers to the league’s dominant team http://www.virtualmanager.com/clubs/262295, the big spenders from Denmark established some 7 years ago and two times winners of the Coppa Italia.

The stars of the season for Newcastle were the impressive 29 year old Ukrainian striker http://www.virtualmanager.com/players/9462560-jakiv-adam-panchukh who netted 19 times, and versatile Austrian playmaker http://www.virtualmanager.com/players/9266287-ludwig-ortleib who had 9 assists and 11 goals capping, a career-best performance for the player now in his 15th season at Newcastle. Panchukh’s goals were additionally important because seasoned Argentine striker http://www.virtualmanager.com/players/9243358-gonzalo-jose-cardozo was injured for most of the campaign, yet Cardoza still managed a cameo of 6 goals, bringing his Tyneside total to an impressive 286!

For the Newcastle fans, playing in Seria A will be a fantastic opportunity to mix with the big boys of Virtual Manager football. Supporters’ Club chairman Billie Whitehurst commented that “this is really what we’ve always been hoping for, to see our team play in the very top flight of the game. It’s pretty amazing what Rolf and the boys have achieved in such a short space of time, and though it’s always sad to see great servants of the club leave, like http://www.virtualmanager.com/players/9188357-omar-acco and http://www.virtualmanager.com/players/9125295-burne-remond-crelley the manager really does have a great eye for talent and I am very excited to see promising players like http://www.virtualmanager.com/players/10365880-kevin-kilduff and http://www.virtualmanager.com/players/9774707-behrad-pazhwak arrive at the club. Thanks to the great stewardship of our club, we now have a fantastic 31,800 capacity at the Sir Kevin Keegan Stadium, and its nearly always packed out, so fair play, the owner is doing a great job here, unlike a certain other club owner who just doesn’t understand what it means to have a fantastic football club maximising its potential.”

The Newcastle Evening Chronicle asked Bergstrom what his expectations were for next year’s season in the top tier. ”Well, the team has really deserved this. We have been building and building to this, and though we still have some way to go to get a team together which is able to compete for the highest honours, it is going to be very hard for us next season, competing against teams that have been around three times as long as our club, that’s not very easy to do. We will do our best in both the cup and the league, and try to establish ourselves in this high quality league, even if it takes us a few seasons. Some of our best players are moving towards the end of their careers, so this is definitely something that I will be talking to David (Maguire) about over the closed season to see what we can do to help maintain our momentum.”
