Season 2020-14 match review

Written 5 April 2020, 17:51

After one frustrating match where our team barely shot one time despite having 47% ball possession and opponent had 11/9 shots/shots on goal, I've decided to take a deeper look at this season's match statistics provided by VMEnhancer.
Based on ratings comparison our team was supposed to get 11-12 wins and 6-7 draws and the following points for each category:

Win points: 34,263
Draw points: 6,285
Total Points: 40,548

Complete match list results with predicted probabilities for won/draw/lost matches:

We have managed to get 12 wins and 7 draws, on the high side of the predicted points totaling 43 points.

Biggest win against the odds, with only 6,9% chance of winning against FC Lamselona:

Other interesting statistics:
4 other matches were won despite having under 33% chances of winning (+).
2 matches were a draw where we had over 45% chance of winning (-).
5 matches were a draw where opponent had over 42% of winning(+).
3 matches were lost when we had between 37,5 and 51% chances of winning(-).

Some of the games lost were played on Reduced if the opponent had a very superior chance and high chance of winning, and some of them were played with the substitutes coming from the youth team.

Overall, despite some upsets, I am happy with how the season evolved, despite periods of heavy losses with 4&3 lost matches in a row, and the unexpected 3 draws and a win in the last matches.

I was expecting a higher ranking but due to the need to play with substituts we lost a lot of points. The objective this season was a top 6 ranking, a very ambitious one. But due to several factors that had an impact on the results it was difficult to get there.

We also lost a 65 rated DL in the beginning of the season, making it a problem on the left flank where I had to alternate a 57 DC played in a 3-back formation with 4-2-3-1 formation with a young 52/53 rated DL in the beginning of the season before the signing of an FC when we switched to 4-2-2-2.

As the youth grow and train the hope is to have less impact on the results due to being forced to play 30+ minutes with 40-50 rated players against 70-80 rated players.
For a while we've also been missing a left midfielder but as of this moment the search is still ongoing, we almost snatched one up on auction but due to limited funds we were forced to stop the bid at 1.86M and lost 2 players just over this price.
Now with the acquisition of a new youth for 500k (and another bid in progress) the budget is even lower, but we're hopeful that in the next week a suitable suitor will be found, 28-30yo ML over 60 rated with balanced skills, but for the moment the prices have gone crazy so the club won't get on a spending spree just to fill a position.

This was never one of the policies in our club and following the buy cheap sell expensive we managed to get where we are in less than a year. A press release will follow the anniversary of our club's first year in existance.
