Lokomotive Bryggen

2019-50: Head of Coffee

Written 16 December 2019, 10:26

Season 2019-50 was a rather quiet and uneventful season for Lokomotive Bryggen. Never really in danger of relegation and never really close to Top-3, the season finished with a very respectable fifth place. In the DFB-pokal, Bryggen lost in the round of 16.

Just as the season ended, activity at Bryggen’s HQ suddenly went through the roof. First Bryggen Arena was upgraded at a cost of 12M. Now 64K people can watch Piontek’s chosen ones every match. Then three new players were brought in at a total amount of 22.6M: Portuguese Pochino Villa (5.35M) is replacing aging Slovak Jurkovic (254 games). Villa is turning 31 in a couple of seasons, so we expect him to be a temporary solution in the right midfield. Next up was Norwegian Peder Breyer (9M) who came from Lindholm BK. Breyer replaces club legend Alfred Bramskov (167 goals in 542 matches), who has worn the yellow jersey of Bryggen more than anyone in club history. Lastly, Bryggen spent 8.25M on Slovakian left winger Samuel Hlinka. Hlinka is only 26 years old and he is not expected to replace Chilean Benavides right away. He is probably only going to play a few matches now, but the plan is that he will be ready to take over in a couple of seasons. Benavides found the net 22 times in 35 matches last season, so it is not the smallest of shoes to fill.

Due to the upgrade of Bryggen Arena, the financial statement of 2019-50 showed a minus of 5.9M. For the second week in a row, trading only netted around 1M. We asked Chief Dealer Lick Neeson about the issue: “In general the market just isn’t what it used to be. Trading is simply down to lower level that it was 25 seasons ago. Furthermore the salary system is rather retarded, which means that a club of Bryggen’s statue has to pay even mediocre players a fee of 15-25K a day. That obviously diminishes our potential profit so we have to be a lot more selective of our trades”. That proclamation prompted us to talk to Bryggen’s Head Treasurer Enid Ford A’Kash about whether it is still a sound business model to have a Chef Dealer on the pay roll: “Well, we keep hoping that the market will turn, so we have absolutely no plans of getting rid of Lick. Meanwhile we have found other areas in which Lick can help the organization. The timing was perfect as our caretaker left us very recently, so rather than hiring a new one, Lick has taken over some of his tasks. Besides operating in the market, Lick now is also head of fetching sandwiches and making coffee. He is good at that too”.

We wish Lokomotive Bryggen the very best of luck in the season 2019-51
