Lokomotive Bryggen

2020-20: A record breaking season

What a season!

During the last two seasons, Lokomotive Bryggen have lost some excellent players in Hlinka, Stockholm, Encius, Lorca and Fritz. Because of that, we couldn't see the club being in contention for medals. As so often before, we were too pessimistic.

Only one game into the season, newly aquired Scotchman Iain Kelly left Bryggen. 21M was an offer the club couldn't refuse. Kelly played only 23 matches for Bryggen, but he made 4M in profits for the club when sold. Kelly was replaced with 28 year old central defender Tim van Pyumbrouck (12M) from Belgium so Head Coach Piontek once again reverted to a 433 formation which he has used sporadicly over the years. Oh boy, was that a success!

Of the first 18 matches, Bryggen only lost two! But then Albanian international Lorik Dervishi was sold for a record breaking 27.5M, resulting in a record breaking profit of 7.5M. The management immediately brought in replacement in the form of 29 year old Romanian Claudio Dalakis (13M). Nevertheless, Bryggen lost the next four games!

Piontek managed to get the ship back on track though, and in the end Bryggen had amassed a record breaking 57 points, which proved enough for a record breaking silver medal! The club wasn't exactly unlucky: Only one goal differentiated Bryggen from bronze winners FC Arsenal, and Brians Brigade in 4th place was only one point behind.

The sales of Kelly and Dervishi resulted in a record breaking trading result of 11.5M, which was a big contributor to the financial result of 19.7M

The Bundesliga is very close and competitive at the moment so it will be exciting to follow Lokomotiv Bryggen next season. Can they repeat? Probably not but it wouldn't be they first time, the team has surprised us. What can be said with almost 100% certainty however, is that Piontek will continue with a 433 formation. Anything else would be downright moronic after this season's overwhelming success.
