Lokomotive Bryggen

2020-22: Super Cup success

Written 3 June 2020, 10:05

After two epic seasons, 2020-22 turned out to be a bit of an anti-climax. Before the season even got started, French left midfielder Robert Aurenche was picked up by fellow Bundesliga club FC SuperHumle for 16.5M. His replacement was 29 year old Roegelio Verdasco (9M) from Spain. Other than that, Lokomotive Bryggen played with the same 11 players than won the Bundesliga the season before. But this time around, not everything went Bryggen's way, so the team finished in a rather dissapointing 7th place.

Some unsuspected success came in the Super Cup - the tournament of the 14 national champions of the world. In the 1st round, Bryggen eliminated Scottish champions FC Barcelona Club at their home turf due to a goal from Kristinn Johannes in extra time. Next up was the portuguese champions Kyoto Okami FC, another away game. Once again Icelander Johannes scored the decider in extra time, and Bryggen was in the semifinale. Again, Bryggen had to travel, this time to Swedish champion PAN United. The match was rather even until Claudia Dalakis was presented with a red card in the 36th minute. From there on, Bryggen was outplayed and lucky to get away with only a 0-1 loss. As a losing semifinalist, Bryggen got paid 1.68M - more than the club got for winning the Bundesliga!

Towards the end of the season, another champion left the team. Danish defender Lasse Schou was sold for 12M (a loss of 2.5M) and replaced with Frenchman Bernard Fleury who has been with the club for six seasons as a developing player and already played 75 games for Bryggen. Fleury is barely an adult with his 25 years, so we're skeptical that he will be able to perform in the Bundesliga at such a young age

The financial statement showed a plus of 7.6M.

In the post season, English striker Dexter Hansbury (265 goals in 625 games) was put up for auction to be replaced by 26 year old Czech Ferdinand Schindler, who set the club back 19M. We find that Bryggen has an exciting team, but the loss of Aurenche, Schou and Hansbury will not go unnoticed. Actually we will consider the upcoming season a success if the team can repeat the 7th place finish. We will have to wait some seasons before Bryggen will be in contention for medals again.
