Diament Garwolin

Drama! Controversy! The Wooden Spoon!

Written 27 May 2013, 19:53

After an extraordinary end to a very exciting 3rd One Nation Team World Cup, Georgia, represented by Diament Garwolin, has been awarded the Wooden Spoon for the second time in three appearances!

Georgia had been matched up against a very strong Switzerland (Sildegapet FC) side for the two-legged final. From the start, both managers were confident that their team could emerge victorious, and actively engaged in pre-match mind games, in the hope of gaining a crucial psychological advantage.
Lord Radz is reported to have sent the following statement after purchasing Dmitro Samiilak:
"Newsflash! New kid on the block: Dmitro Samiilak
The only non-Georgian in my starting 11. 200cm tall, 89kgs of muscle. Intmidated?"

Whereas the Swiss manager, Chowdhury, tried to accuse the Diamonds' boss of cowardice:
"Come on then diament...where is this freindly invitation......are you too scared..."

Finally, on Tuesday night, at the Stadium of Bigo & Starzoom, the first leg of the final began. The Georgians, with great support from the home fans, stayed really solid and concentrated in defence throughout the game, but just couldn't create enough chances to score; in the end, the Swiss managed to put one past Kostava with barely 12 minutes remaining, and Georgia had to settle for a narrow 0-1 loss.

Lord Radz urged his players to keep their heads up and concentrate on the return leg at the Cottage on Saturday.
The second game began with the Diamonds clearly pushing for a win. They kept up with the Swiss for long periods of time, and passed the ball around well. However, once again it was Sildegapet, and more precisely their top scorer Hans Rudolf Imfeld, who smashed home the opening goal on 32 minutes.
After this, Radz urged his team to press forward and really look for those two goals they so desperately needed. Just on the stroke of half-time, Shako Kinkladze picked up the ball in the middle of the field, and played a wonderful ball to Megreladze, who had peeled off Pinheiro to receive it. Lasha then spun around and lauched an absolute rocket to beat Roger Guttenberger and put the score at 1-1.
Unfortunately, Switzerland came out fighting for the second half and it wasn't long until Sildegapet's home grown 19 year-old centre-midfielder, Urs Baumann, put them in front. Georgia continued to struggle and started running out of stamina, which was promptly exploited by Messerli on 72 minutes, before Fritz Zuber completed the destruction 10 minutes later. While all this was happening, Chowdhury made 3 routine substitutions in order to let his younger talents have a run-out - this would later prove to have disastrous consequences for his team.
At the final whistle, jubilation ensued as the home fans celebrated a deserved 5-1 aggregate win over Georgia, while the away supporters left the stadium with rather sober expressions.
No-one could have expected the drama that was to follow.

About 15 minutes after the end of the game, Diament Garwolin officials issued the following statement to the organisers of the tournament:

"URGENT: Diament Garwolin are launching an official inquiry following an incident which took place in the 85th minute of the Wooden Spoon Final Second Leg. Switzerland (Sildegapet FC) started the game with 3 international players: Avikar Duchin (Israel), Felix Pinheiro (Mexico) and Baldwyn Mcguire (England). This makes a total of 8 Swiss players, the minimum allowed on the field of play according to rule 1 of the ONTWC:

"1) ALL TEAMS MUST HAVE A MINIMUM OF 8 PLAYERS FROM THEIR CHOSEN NATION ON THE PITCH AT ANY TIME IN ALL ONT GAMES. FAILURE TO DO SO WILL RESULT IN THE GAME BEING AWARDED TO THE OTHER TEAM DESPITE THE ACTUAL RESULT. "

Diament Garwolin's officials believe that in the 85th minute of the game, Heerad Al-Nawas (Iran) was substituted in for Getoar Roshardt (Switzerland), making the total of 4 international, and 7 Swiss players, thus breaking the aforementioned Rule 1!
While there is no direct video evidence of who left the field of play to be replaced by Al-Nawas, there are two arguments to support the above theory:
1. Al-Nawas and Roshardt are both left defenders, so it would make sense to replace one with the other,
2. There is direct video evidence of such a substitution in one of Sildegapet FC's league games: Sildegapet FC 9-1 Vandoorn fc, played 25/05/2013, at 04:25 GMT

We appeal for our inquiry to be reviewed, and propose that in accordance with the tournament rules the match, and thus the Wooden Spoon, be awarded to Georgia (Diament Garwolin)."

As it turned out, by coming onto the pitch 5 minutes before the end, Heerad Al-Nawas had indeed broken Rule 1 of the competition. The manager of Golf Boys of Vilnius (ONTWC organiser) ruled that in this case, Diament Garwolin are awarded a walkover score of 3-0 in the second leg, making the aggregate 3-1 in Georgia's favour!
The celebrations erupted among the Diamonds' fans as they heard the news, and the partying continued long into the night!

Lord Radz' reaction:
" I was the one who first noticed Chowdhury's fatal error in the final minutes of the game, but didn't want to tell the lads until we had a proper look at the match replay and compiled an official appeal. I have great respect for Sildegapet FC and will be the first to admit that they outplayed us on their home turf. It's a shame to see them lose because of a technicality but rules are rules, and that's the price you pay for playing too many internationals in your starting eleven.
At the same time, I have to praise my players for putting in a great performance, especially at home. It really shows the importance of bravery and perseverance in the face of stronger opposition - after, if Switzerland had won the first game by the same margin as the second, we would've lost even with the walkover 3-0"

From now on, the rules of ONTWC will be changing: teams are now put into three leagues and will will play in a league format. There is also a cup running alongside the league competition, which involves one-legged knockout ties.

Top Three of the 3rd ONTWC:

1. Afghanistan (Afghanistan)
2. Finland (Dynamo Groby)
3. Spain (valencia of)

Up the Diamonds!
