Yao Gong Retirement Special

Written 8 December 2021, 21:04

The club legend and record top scorer Yao Gong has retired today, at the age of 35. In this tribute, we look back on the incredible career of one of the few remaining one-club men in world football.

It was a capacity crowd that turned up to witness Yao Gong’s last ever game, away to longtime rivals Bramdrup United. The left-forward did not disappoint, scoring a hattrick in the 3-1 win and collecting the Man of the Match award to give the traveling Diamonds’ fans a day to remember for the rest of their lives.

After the game, the supporters carried him on their shoulders all the way to the team bus, and there was a guard of honour as the bus rolled into Garwolin, with townsfolk coming out of their homes despite the December weather, to give a standing ovation to their hero. Truly a fitting fairy-tale ending.

Despite never being touted as one of football’s big talents, Yao Gong earned Lord Radz’ trust and respect with his consistent goalscoring form. Initially a prolific assist merchant for the youth team, over time he developed into a true poacher, scoring goals from all sorts of angles and always managing to be at the right place, at the right time.
Yao’s personal single-season goals record of 70 goals in 36 games in 2021-09 is unlikely to ever be beaten (in addition to the goals, he also recorded 18 assists and 21 MotM awards in the same campaign). A career total of 463 MotM awards is also almost 200 more than the great Besarion Chokheli, and a testament to his impact on the pitch when he plays.

Gong’s greatest career highlights included leading the team to its first ever promotion into Division 3, and a historic quarter-final appearance at the Newcomers Challenge Cup, feats which were not achieved even when the aforementioned Chokheli was leading the line. He was a special player, and one who will be sorely missed by his fellow players, the manager, the fans, and all the staff at Diament Garwolin. The club has annouced the number 1 shirt will be retired in recognition of his greatness.

And now, we will let you wonder at the incredible numbers generated over Yao Gong’s career, playing exclusively for the Diamonds!
