Bernese Oberland Cup review

Written 26 August 2012, 16:20

The second Bernese Oberland kicked off with a stunning match with Sunbird Athletic pitched against the previous cup's winners Spion Kop. But did the rest of the tournament live up to the opening night.

1) The Winners
FC Blyski Atsiskaitymu were imposing and never came close to losing a match. They were the best side and dominated even in a very one sided final which they won 4-0. Their impressive squad structure and members of the squad gave little chance to the defending champions who were brushed aside. A very impressive 24 goal tally over just seven games really has the pundits raving about their future. They were without doubt the best team of the tournament.

2) Spion Kop FC

They won the first Bernese Oberland Cup but failed to defend their title. They played well but were outclassed in the final. Although they will be clearly upset they defend their top rank position in the rankings and are streets in front of their nearest rivals.

3) Baruque Abrao

Spion Kop's front three were not on best form throughout the tournament and Riise Dalland especially struggled. But Spion Kop made up with it with Baruque Abrao who scored the goal of the tournament against p
Parkrangers and was generally incredible. He outshone his team mates and in the final he played incredibly for the first half hour before being substituted due to an injury. He was undoubtedly the best player of the tournament and deserved the golden ball award signifying his brilliance.

4) Kazuto Oikawa

Parkrangers forward was on fire andcould not stop finding the back of the net.He scored a massive seven goals in just six matches to give himself the golden boot award. He was not renowned before this tournament but he was ruthless.

5) Surprise Packet

Parkrangers were the surprise packet by stunning the tournament in picking up third place. They were always predicted to move out of the group stage but were thought to be easy meat for the winners of Group B. However, they upstaged Sildegapet FC before almost triumphing over Spion Kop. They managed though to take a well earned third spot on the podium.

6) Biggest losers

Bolton Wanderers had had high hopes of a good tournament but they bought a team of youngsters. This failed miserably and they managed to pick up the second wooden spoon in a row letting in 10 goals in just 2 matches. They went home thoroughly defeated but will look for revenge.

7) Biggest flops

Johns Army were predicted to fight it out for the winners position in Group C, the Group of death, before taking on either Spion Kop or the eventual champions for a space in the final. However, all did not go to plan. Firstly they did not really challenge in the Group stages despite progressing before having to rely on a lucky losers spot to get into the semi-final. Things only got worse and were comprehensively defeated 9-0 over the two legs by FC Blyski Atsiskaitymu before not even getting on the Podium with a 4-0 loss to Parkrangers.

8) Goals Galore

Quite literally, there were thousands of goals. 73 goals in just 21 matches. Crowds were treated to an average of just under 3.5 goals per game with the most number of goals in one game coming from Johns Army 0 V FC Blyski Atsiskaitymu 7 while the least was in a goalless draw between Market Bosworth and Sildegapet FC.

9) The bizarre

During the 6-0 win for Market Bosworth over Bolton Wanderers, a shot from Lear Lobley hot the metal poles behind the goal and rebounded back towards the pitch. Unfortunately the keeper was still on the ground and the ball rebounded off him and into the back of the net. Fortunately, the referee saw and no goal was given.

10) The ludicrous

Sildegapet V Market Bosworth at Wellborough Road. The fans are ready, the players are ready. But the VIFA official is not. He was left stranded for half an hour before his kit for the match arrived.

See you next time for more bizarre but great football.
