Finished out as Wanderers face challenge

Written 24 September 2012, 18:39

Bolton Wanderers have set up a win or go home situation after they failed to capitalise on on Auction Finished’s weak back line. Wanderers were always the better side and it showed as they dominated possession and denied their opposition any shots on goal.

Although Bolton Wanderers were clearly the better side, they failed to really threaten the goal in the first half, being content with long balls and trying the spectacular shot. However, in the one time that there was a neat build up, Bolton Wanderers should have really done better. Nabi Asil was the culprit for not putting the ball in the back of the net as he exchanged a sharp one two with his strike partner Patrik Pallesen on the edge of the box and broke the offside trap. He should really have shot immediately but his first touch let him down. However, he made up for it by rounding the keeper and unleashing a low shot from a very tight angle. However, he could only find the side netting when he really should have pulled the ball back to his strike partner Maximilian Bean to slot home. The only other notable effort on target was also from Maximilian Bean who tried his luck from a free kick just outside the edge of the box but he was denied by the post and a scrambling defence.

In the second half, Wanderers dominated and began to search for a way through. Maximilian Bean put through Blake Johnson but Johnson was clearly tripped in the box but the referee waved play on. Johnson had another chance late on but as he burst into the box he was off balance and blasted the ball miles over the crossbar to the frustration of Wanderers. Nabi Asil who had been quiet after his early miss missed a 78th minute penalty and was promptly substituted. His substitute almost did what his predecessor failed to do, score. From a corner in injury time, the ball was not cleared and it fell to Beldon Cielo Boughton who put the ball in the back of the net only to be, unfairly as it happened, waved offside.

After the match, Wanderers referee Paul, blasted his players and the referee, something he may have to pay for. He could not believe that his team missed quite so many chances and he blasted the referee for some ‘poor decisions that hampered [his] team’. But the result will still stand which means that Auction Finished will go home after just the group stages, while Bolton Wanderers will have to travel to the Cottage in search of an upset.
