Whites scrape through as Wanderers wander on

Written 24 September 2012, 18:59

Bolton Wanderers almost pulled off the biggest surprise the tournament has seen in its history, only to fall in the dying minutes. They dominated large parts of the game as the whites struggled to get into their tempo.

Wanderers dominated the first ten minutes of the match, barely having to pass the ball back into their own half. Ken Erdmann should have opened the scoring within the first five minutes as he broke through the Sildegapet defence and volleyed the through ball onto the crossbar for it to be hooked away. As Sildegapet were starting to get some possession, the deadlock was broken. Ken Erdmann who had been so close to scoring in the first five minutes was again played onside and again the through ball was inch perfect. This time though, he calmly controlled the ball, rounded Hopkins and slotted the ball into the net. Cries of offside were certainly not appropriate. From then on, it was Sildegapet who began to do the pressing and start creating a few of their own chances. But Bolton still dominated possession as their passing was horribly scruffy. Despite that, some good defending from Khariton Otkupshchikov there were no more efforts on target before the half time break.

After half time, it was mostly Sildegapet but Bolton Wanderers were happy enough to play keep ball and Sildegapet were getting frustrated that they could not complete easy passes. Sildegapet though did have numerous chances and Kiestra, Valente and Manson all should have scored from crosses and shots from inside the area but none of them were on target or powerful enough to beat the Wanderers Keeper. The frustration boiled over when Manson slid into a tackle dangerously and it became a heated affair. Manson was extremely lucky to remain on the field let alone not being booked. However, it seemed as if Wanderers were going to hold on in any case with just three minutes of stoppage time left. In the final attack of the game as it later proved, Sildegapet finally managed to salvage a draw and a place in the semifinals. A low cross from Josef Kiestra was deflected off the keeper as Valente’s shot hit the keeper and bobbled upwards. However, a diving header from a late incoming Karl Altaner was too powerful for the keeper who was only able to parry it into the roof of the net.

Moments later, the game was to end without another pass being completed. It certianly was a scruffy game from Sildegapet who only managed to qualify for the semi-finals through some luck and a very scruffy goal. On terms of merit, Wanderers deserved a place in the semis and as Pauls said, Manson should have been sent off and then the game would have become far easier to win. However, as it happened, Sildegapet will progress with four points to the semis where they will face the winners of the other group.
