Yrjo Paakkonen Testimonial Series

Written 8 September 2013, 11:09

The series of friendlies celebrating Yrjo Paakkonen's Dynamo Groby career came to an end this week, as the central defender finally played his last game of an incredible 2,666 for the club. A wide variety of opposition answered the call to help celebrate at Vale Park, and though none of the biggest guns came calling, there was enough sparkle and competition to provide a worthwhile event for the supporters of the club.
Paakkonen has issued a statement, thanking the fans for their support during this time, and to thank the teams who participated in his testimonial series, and wishes the club all the best for the future.

Dynamo Groby 4-0 Real Laukko

Finland and Finland clashed at Vale Park, as the two sides representing Finland in the ONT came together for the first time, in honour of Paakkonen being the first player in on the Dynamo Groby Finnish project. An entertaining encounter, saw Dynamo take an early lead through Osku Huopio and Nestori Alapassi before Real got a grip on themselves and started to perform. The scoreline remained at 2-0 until very late on, when Groby striker Mika Ilmonen hit a quickfire double to seal the 4-0 win.

Dynamo Groby 1-3 Afghanistan

Another set of ONT opponents for Paakkonen, this time round ONT title holders Afghanistan, who have won every ONT since taking the title of first time winners Dynamo Groby. A step up in class, this game proved slightly too much for Dynamo Groby, as the Afghan side showed their credentials, striker Mubarek scoring a hattrick to give the away side a firm and deserved lead, but Dynamo fans had something to cheer late on, as Mika Ilmonen found the net with a consolation in stoppage time.

Dynamo Groby 1-4 Wee Jimmie Crankie F.C.

Dynamo Groby have been to four NCC finals, winning one in their history, and though Paakkonen himself only went to one of those finals, and ended up on the beaten side that day, a game against the NCC holders at the time provided him an opportunity to revisit the glory. It was not to be, despite all evidence early on, as Dynamo Groby took an early lead with a goal from the main man, Paakonen himself popping up in unfamiliar territory to fire in a 14th minute goal, to a huge roar from the home support. Vale Park was rocking, but the NCC holders showed their mettle and the lead lasted just three minutes before Khanum-Gul equalised. Worse was to come for the Finnish side, as Wee Jimmie Crankie FC. really got into their groove, Chiu-Fa gave them a lead five minutes later, and even with the home crowd roaring them on, Dynamo Groby couldn't find a way to break through and restore parity. The NCC holders added two late goals in the last four minutes of the game, but Paakkonen had some credit on the day, as he won the Man of the Match award.

Dynamo Groby 2-1 Tesco Value F.C.

A close run game at Vale Park, against a side whose manager is known throughout the VM world. Two evenly matched sides had an entertaining game, Mika Ilmonen giving Dynamo Groby a first half lead, though Tesco Value F.C. were level within two minutes, when Væring scored. Chances at either end followed, but Dynamo looked like being denied as the away keeper put in a superb man of the match display to keep them out and the game looked to be heading for a draw until Taaveti Sarkola, one of the up and coming youths at Vale Park, came on as a substitute and managed to find a way past the determined keeper in the away goal to nick the win for Dynamo.

Dynamo Groby 4-1 Gloucester City

A game against opponents Dynamo met regularly in the English leagues, and Dynamo Groby were able to release the shackles once again at Vale Park, Yrjo Alanko and Mika Ilmonen firing the home side into an early two goal lead after just eleven minutes. Gloucester City weren't rolling over though, and pulled one back on fourteen minutes as Adamaitis scored, but Dynamo were having none of it, and restored their two goal lead very quickly, with a second goal from Alanko. Mika Ilmonen completed his double with eight minutes left to play in the game, to complete the game for the Vale Park side.
