Written 17 April 2014, 21:06

Sad news from Vale Park today, as Taavi Litmanen finally decides to hang up his gloves and call time on a long and eventful career with Dynamo Groby. The big Finnish goalkeeper was the first Dynamo Groby youth to make the progression to the first team, and has been a fixture ever since. Litmanen has been a safe pair of hands in the Dynamo goal, for more than 90 seasons, and has set the Club Appearance Record, smashing Yrjo Paakkonen's previous marker set at 2,666 games. The record club appearance tally set by Litmanen remains to be seen, as his retirement date is still a little way away, and Litmanen will be sure to play every game in the meantime. Taavi also represented the international side at every level in his career.
Dynamo Groby issued a statement today thanking Litmanen for his long and loyal service to the club, and have announced that in honour of his time at the club, a series of testimonial friendly matches will be arranged without delay. Everyone from the tea lady and boot cleaners up to the owners of the club owe Taavi a debt of gratitude for his service and commitment to the cause, through good times and bad. It truly is the end of an era at Vale Park, as Litmanen represents the first batch of promising young Finnish youths to come through the Dynamo system, and a truly loyal one club man, who did all he could in service of the team and the project. Representing Dynamo in the ONT tournament too, he was present through some of the clubs great moments in his time here, and can surely claim plenty of credit for some of the clubs achievements in his career.
Yrjo Paakkonen also commented, stating he was pleased to see Litmanen be the one to break his club appearance record, and hopes that the next player to break the tally will deserve it as much as Taavi does.
Taavi Litmanen himself also issued a short statement, thanking the Vale Park club and also the fans of the team for their ongoing support throughout his career, and voiced the opinion that his successor in the squad, Uuno Salmelainen will be a more than capable to fill his considerable gloves. The young keeper has come on well, and been very patient to wait for his chance.
