I am a returning player and have no idea what tactics are "meta"

This probably isn't too useful, but off the top of my head:
Always put players on green squares or they receive a penalty/reduction in abilities... only exception I make for this is when parking the bus with all players back.
For a general rule of thumb, you need minimum 3 midfielders otherwise you incur a possession penalty... Unsure if there is a benefit of playing with >3? as midfielders seem to cost more owing to there stat distribution?
Most teams seem to play with 'shoot on sight' instruction.
Perhaps try looking at some teams in the top leagues and see if there are any reoccurring formations/tactics.
