I was beat 6-0 by a team playing with a wide tactic today, which reminded me of this thread.

Obviously it goes without saying my opponent had a far stronger team and would have won anyway. In addition, I'm also playing on the lowest possible tempo, defensive and with soft tackling so as to preserve energy for training my youths.
But all of the above considered I'm still surprised it was 6-0 as opposed to say, 3-0. Which made me wonder perhaps you are right in thinking that there is something to the wide formation. I was playing a narrow formation myself.
I then stalked my opponents results. He also lost 3-0 to a similar rated team with a narrow formation and even lost 3-2 to a team with a much lower rating and narrow formation.
With such limited information available about the underlying match engine I guess its not worth fretting over tactics/formation too much. So long as you cover the basics, have decent balance and 3 midfielders I guess the main thing is having a higher rated team +/- home advantage and luck of the day.
That said saying as I'm training youth players for the long haul and not fussed about league position at the moment (would rather stay in lower divisions to save energy), I might have a further play around with different formations.
I don't recall the developers providing a time frame, but I'm looking forward for the introduction of individual player instructions, which will hopefully add more depth to the tactical element of the game. https://www.virtualmanager.com/blog/1127-5-substitutions-new-player-profile-pics-and-development-plan
